Remembering Matt Durr

Notre Dame Class of 1972 lost one of their own when Matthew M. Durr, of Utica, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Matt was born in Utica on July 31, 1954, the son of Edmund J. and Margaret (Vollmer) Durr. Matt was a devout Catholic, a graduate of Notre Dame High School, and a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, New Hartford.

A beloved classmate of all that knew him, Matt's senior quote in the yearbook was,

"Nothing can be purchased which is better than a precious friend."

Matt carried that ideal throughout his life as he was affectionately known to many as "The Mayor." Matt was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, whose greatest joy came from spending time with his children and especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. Family values and traditions were especially important to Matt, and he eagerly looked forward to the annual Durr, Riley, and Ryan family reunion that spanned a period of over 65 years.

He was a coach and past president of the Greater Utica Girls Softball league and coached Notre Dame High School softball from 1988-1996, which was very dear to his heart. In 1994, his Notre Dame softball team won Section 3 and Regional titles and made it to the state finals. Matt was named NYS Class C Softball Coach of the Year.

His former softball players shared fond memories;

I'm at a loss for words but my heart breaks for the entire Durr family. Your Dad (Coach Durr to many) was such a huge influence in my life all throughout high school, I looked up to him in many ways. He was an amazing mentor to so many of us and such a loving and caring man. Sending all my love and prayers to everyone. -Erin Nackley

I'm so sorry for you and your family's loss. Your dad was an amazing man and was truly one of the reasons I loved softball so much! I have so many great memories. Sending love and prayers to all of you. -Kelly Zangrilli Vitullo

To have known Matt was to have truly loved him, and the world was a better place because he was in it.

For those looking to honor Matt Durr, donations can be sent to the Marian Club c/o Notre Dame High School at 2 Notre Dame Lane, Utica, NY 13502, to the attention of Carrie Putelo.
