Statement from the Board of Trustees

Over the past two weeks, Notre Dame has chosen to take a step back to allow the voices from our Black communities to be heard.  The atrocities surrounding George Floyd’s death are unfortunately not isolated incidences, and we are committed to standing alongside our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to fight for significant and lasting change towards equality.

The mission of Notre Dame is important now more than ever.  We must foster a culture of inclusivity that prepares our students to lead a better, more just world. It is our responsibility, both personally and collectively, to stand up and speak out for change.

According to God’s word, we are called to be peacemakers in a very divided world.  As such, we want to be part of the conversation. As Cardinal Timothy Dolan has recently pointed out, the Book of Ecclesiastes teaches us, “There is a time to be silent and a time to speak out.”   The time to speak out is now.
